A few weeks ago it was posted that Lyle is closed to protect wildlife http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-7293.html&highlight=lyle but i saw a post of guys kiting there yesterday. Can the CGKA site rep - Forrest? give us a definitive open or closed?
I like riding at Lyle but don't want to add ammunition to getting access shut down.
Thanks - Paul |

| If it is closed for nesting bald eagles, it would probably be in effect until the end of march. However, I'm not sure where bald eagles would be nesting around there and additionally, kites would not bother bald eagles. |

Paul - thank you for checking to see if Lyle is open before you go ride there! We (CGKA) are planning to work with the railroad and the landowners to have them bless our kiteboarding there, but in the meantime if we have responsible riders like you, our chances are better - thanks.
Forrest is in Texas right now and he probably does not have access to a computer. If kyle.vh is reading this post - can you tell us if there were any closure signs around?
We will post as our plan progresses. We appreciate guys like Paul who want to help us achieve our goals. If anyone has anything to add please post it here. Once we get some traction going, we will create threads on it. Part of our commitment to the members last night at the election meeting was to communicate better - so we are trying.
Thanks, Jim |

I didn't realized there was a potential conflict. I didn't see any signs, but I parked on the river side of the road. Would there have been signs in the parking lot across the street? It was my first time there, and no one else was there when I arrived, so I wasn't sure where to park. Some folks showed up as I was leaving, they didn't mention anything.
I hadn't seen that closure post. I certainly don't want to jeopardize access (or scare any eagles!).
I actually headed there because I saw this post: http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-7581.html , from last weekend and thought it looked cool-- I wanted to try a new launch. |

| Hey Kyle, no worries. We're not trying to give you a hard time or anything. We just knew from your lyle/bar/lines thread that you had kiteboarded there, and we are trying to determine if the closure signs people had seen there before have been removed or not. Sounds like if you had seen closure signs you would not have gone kiteboarding - good for you. BTW - I posted a response on your bar/lines thread. Let us know if you need some help! |

It seems odd that there would be a bald eagle management plan for the Lyle spit, but who knows. Typically, unless there are construction projects slated near mapped eagle nesting sites, only state agencies like the parks department will enact a plan to protect resident or migrating bald eagles.
Bald eagles usually nest in large broken conifers within 1/2 mile of suitable foraging areas. Perhaps their is a artificial nest platform near the RR tracks? I'm interested to see what Forest digs up, I have a feeling someone was just playing around. |

Sorry Guys, I'm still in Texas for a wedding. Brought my boards down to hit the cable lake and it was to cold and windy to ride. The cable lake had shin high chop and was 50 degrees. Go figure, should have brought my kites down too.
So, I've been in contact with the Klickitat County Planning Dept to find out more about this area of land. I've been playing a little bit of phone tag but plan to know more this week. I've not visited the site yet this year.
I know nothing about any closure, but I also haven't established the CGKA and myself with the powers that be... I'm still trying to find out who the powers that be are.
I wouldn't worry about any closure at this point until I find something specific that states it's closed. You can still get to the Launch by parking in the lot on the north side of the highway and walking down the path that leads east out of the parking lot, under the bridge and following it around to the sandbar. This route avoids the roadway and the railroad and currently is the safest way to get to the launch.
I'm trying to determine how to avoid the RR tracks to get to the launch as my primary objective. If I can cut the RR out of the equation, it makes everyone's life simpler.
I imagine this closure might be specific to the "point" which is on the east side of the Klickitat river mouth. |

No worries, Shredjim. I appreciated you taking the long view and being concerned with keeping the place open w/out incident for everyone. And--thanks for the tips in the other thread. |
