Unfair County rules may kill windsurfing schools on Maui
Maui County has proposed new rules that will almost certainly kill watersports instruction on Maui. This is bad news for the Maui watersports community. And bad news for all the schools that have been serving the community for decades (some schools 23+ years).
Just one example is, Proposed Rule 10-102-22 prohibiting kiteboarding, surfing, windsurfing, scuba, kayak and snorkeling schools from having more than two instructors working at one time. This will eliminate our kids camps, and any other high-school programs. This will put the vast majority of watersports instructors out of work, and most (if not all) schools will go out of business. The sports affected are Windsurfing, kitesurfing, surfing, kayaking, Scuba diving and snorkeling.
We need public testimony from anyone who supports these water sports. Please support our instructors, and schools by writing a letter or email. And send it to:
parks dept: parks.dept@co.maui.hi.us
Tamara Horcajo, Maui County parks director, tamara.horcajo@co.maui.hi.us
Zachary Helm, deputy director parks, zachary.helm@co.maui.hi.us
Mayor Charmaine Tavares, charmaine.tavares@co.maui.hi.us
Jo Anne Johnson, jo_anne.johnson@mauicounty.us
Michelle Anderson, michelle.anderson@mauicounty.us
Senator Shan Tsutsui, sentsutsui@Capitol.hawaii.gov
Stan Zitnik, mayors assistant: stan.zitnik@co.maui.hi.us
And bcc a copy to
info@mauikiteboardingassociation.com
Thank you and Aloha!! |

Seems like Maui is doing eveything it can right now to put a halt on the developemnt monster that it has created. Who is on council that keeps coming up with these ridiculous proposals? ...anyway ..there seems to be plenty of legal ways around this ruling. Lots of paper work but easy to get around. |

Wind, Surf, Kite schools on Maui threatened by County rules (MC 10-102).
Hi everyone,
We urgently need your testimony that simply supports the need for windsurfing and kitesurfing, & Surfing schools on Maui. (this also affects Scuba Instructors, Kayak guides, and snorkel guides too). We all know what will happen at Kanaha, Kite Beach with no instructors and the lack of lessons available due to the new county rules. People WILL get hurt, kiting will get banned, and then there will be no more great kiting trips to Maui like Phil and the guys just had
(SEE SAMPLE EMAIL AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE)
Testimony is as simple as writing an email with your name, and your opinion (preferably in you own words), why we need water sports instruction on Maui.
You could also say, Please change the rules that are harmful to watersports instructors and schools.
There are many reasons why we need lessons:
it makes the participants safer,
it is better for the other water users,
they learn to be responsible for themselves.
They learn correct equipment selection,
and to know their personal limits.
You can probably think of many more reasons.
(what happens to people without instruction?).
Try to point out the positive aspects of having lessons/schools.
Some windsurfing schools have been teaching on Maui for up to 23 years, some kite schools 10 years.
And they have a perfect safety record. Most schools are family owned /run businesses that have served the community continuously for many years. Watersports schools like this are family businesses that provide for the family, and a network of instructors and support staff.
Please take a minute to write an email to support our schools and instructors. If you have a Maui address PLEASE include in at the bottom of your e-mail.
Thanks,
Suzie Dorn
PS. Please CC a copy of your email back to me, thanks.

EXAMPLE EMAIL: (please re-write in your own words)

To:
Parks Director: parks.dept@co.maui.hi.us, charmaine.tavares@mauicounty.us, mayors.office@mauicounty.gov, kelii@mauivb.com tamara.horcajo@co.maui.hi.us ; jo_anne.johnson@co.maui.hi.us
Mayor: charmaine.tavares@co.maui.hi.us
BCC: suziej@maui.net
Subject: Maui County Rules (MC 10-102)
My name is
.
I am writing in support of Mauis water sports schools and instructors.
On Maui there is a need for access to watersports instruction.
People need lessons to learn about wind, waves and changing ocean conditions. Students need to learn their limits and how to be safe in the ocean. Lessons show participants important skills and respect for other water users. We need to support the schools and instructors that provide this service to local families and visitors. They make our ocean & beaches a safer place. Please do not enforce the number of instructors or limit the number of students these schools can teach.
Regards,

Maui County's proposed new rules ......
My company has employees in Maui County who will only live in Maui because of the life style. Continuing to suggest restrictions to using the water or teaching our kids will heavily discourage everyone from living, working, or even visiting Maui. If you can't enjoy the beaches and oceans and have your kids take safe lessons, no one will come to Maui. Small businesses like mine will also pull our employees which includes the tax dollars sent to Maui County. The beaches and oceans are a natural resource that should not be regulated by any county park employee.
If the county park employees want to do something, they should walk their county parks at night with a policeman willing to make arrests to ALL intoxicated people. They should enforce the living out of the back of a car rule to make the county parks safe to be in at night. You should enforce your max night in a county park campground rules and ask ALL violators to move out. I have personally been hassled by "in-the-day-time" intoxicated individuals who are "living" in your county park. Maybe instead of making rules aimed at people who have jobs and pay taxes, you should enforce some of the reasonable rules you already have to make your parks safe. |

Doing away with lessons? Crazy stuff! Let's just think about the increase in injury rates, the medical expenses, and law suits aimed at Maui county from tourists who injure themselves on vacation!
Will get working a response letter Suzi! Thanks for posting.
