i've got a bud cruising up the west coast. he wants to surf his way up, but he runs out of time before he gets to the northern coast. I'm thinking about heading down and meeting him somewhere, but I don't know that part of the coast.

Where's a good spot WAY south that is good for surfing and kiting (both)?

Bandon Area-- Whiskey/Floras for kiting, Port Orford for surfing.

the wind do an offshore jig down there by crescent. I have heard ,not done, that they kite in the lagoons near orick. there are some lakes / reservoirs there I have heard look good to. The mouth of the kalamath is a very biologically rich region beware. pistol river is closer than whiskey or gold beach area for some open ocean .

Crescent city can be good. Some great spots in Arcata.

Cape Sebastian (surfing) and Pistol (windy), bring tiny gear, one of the windiest places I have seen. Camping can be had at the pulloff in between, or Turtle river RV park south of Gold Beach. Or a bunch of other places, not as crowded as the north coast Cool

Port Orford has some goods and floras.

Went to college at Humboldt State and spent my formative years winsdurfing at Big Lagoon (45 minutes or so south of Crescent City). Great flat water lake right on the ocean, makes Floras look like a frog pond, although its not as windy. Windsurfers launch on the east side, but a rocky shoreline and narrow beach would make kite launching tricky. Better bet: go to the boat ramp on the southwest corner of the lagoon and walk a ways up the spit. Primitive camping right there, or State Park at Patricks Point about a mile or two to the south. Patrick's has a gnarly left point break, but that's a winter time big swell deal. During summertime glassy conditions any one of the lagoons (Freshwater, Dry, Stone, or Big Lagoon) can get good, especially if they break open and create a good sandbar.

Crescent City is no good for summertime wind. The southern Oregon gales do an eddy, and blow offshore or even out of the south when Pistol Rivers howling. Fun waves sometimes though at South Beach in C City.

sorry not to post up, i've been doing the summer kite-vacation.

be sure to check out the www.SouthernOregonKiteAddicts.com kite guide. Pistol river is epic, crescent city is do-able and fun on south wind days, for north go to kellog beach just north of crescent city.

for further south check out humbolt kytes.com

look for the solbus, where up in port oford at the moment, always following the wind.
