Does anyone know the kiting conditions in north side of Peru this time of year. I'm thinking about a trip from Sept. 20 through Oct. 10. I'm trying to figure out flights, rental cars, country safety, the works for 3 awesome weeks. Thanks for your help. _________________ Aloha |

Shan.....North Peru/Mancora is Gary Siskar. Track him down at Liquid Force and he will steer you in the right direction for all that is good about kiting the longest lefts of your life. |

Late September, October and early November are the best months for the Mancora area as the place still has the south winds and is then also getting swell from the north pacific. The left point at Mancora fires under those conditions and can offer up some of the best kitesurfing in northern Peru.
GO, it is an unreal place and you can't go wrong. Take kites that will work in the 15 to 25 knot range, not necessary to bring small 6 and 7m kites. Whatever you do don't go without a 12 to 14m kite or you will be sitting on the beach a lot drooling while the Peruvian local kiters are out killing it!
Once late November rolls around it goes into their summer and the wind shuts down, but the surf is still firing. If you go down there without a surfboard for surfing, then that will be another blunder that you will regret. I recommend staying at Semana Shakra in Mancora which is Gary and Johanna Siskar's resort. Super deluxe, safe, great food and launching right off the sand beach in front of your bungalow. Tack upwind about a 1/4 mile and you are at the left point riding smooth, side-off, nirvana waves. |

A group of us from Hood River went down last year. Some for a week and others for 3. End of October. Kited Mancora, Lobitos, Cape Blanquia, and Pacasmayo. We all would agree that Lobitos has the technical wave with nonstop barrels and that Pacasmayo has a sweet wave that goes for 2km - one after another! There is one surf hotel in Lobitos. Not much of a town. Pacasmayo is a really sweet Peruvian town with a few really good options to stay. Some friends are heading town again this November to Pacasmayo. No need for a rental car if you use the great bus system and taxis. We will eventually post up some photos. Here is a video that a group made that was at Pacasmayo when we were there. Also, we did the Tonia and Gregg recommended trip to Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca.

Yes, that is a 1:45 minute wave ride at Pacasmayo. |

Luke,
That is an unreal video, one of the best that I have seen that captures the feel of kitesurfing long, smooth, perfect point surf. I, too, caught waves of equal lenght at Pacasmayo when I was there in July of 2011. Checked my longest wave lenght on Google Earth ruler that night after riding it and it strung out to 1.25 miles on one wave with dozens of bottom and top turns. That video just convinced me that I have to start making plans for a return trip to Peru. The El Faro Resort is also the coolest place to hang and chill. Got to start saving my pennies...

Yeah Windian!!
You went in July. Other friends go in April for the past 4 years. We went in November. All scored big time. So it goes most of the year.
A group of us are headed to Chile this November for more if any one is interested. |
