Question: Will the salmon and steelhead actually go up that river? My understanding is that they will go where they were born to spawn. I'm not sure how long a salmon or steelhead lives but I'm guessing any that were born above the damn are long dead by now. So will new fish go up the river to spawn if they weren't born there?

they will go up. some go back to their native streams and some will wander into other streams. Mixes it up a little... variety, you know!

The fisheries will be releasing juvenile salmon way above the dam, so when they return in 5-7 years they will smell their way back home to spawn.

There are already in the lower part of the stream. They will absolutely return in force to the upper reaches where the good spawning habitat will be. Super stoked to see this happen!!!

BTW, true salmon return to their native streams but there is also a small percentage of "drift" where the fish just go some where else. Which makes sense from an evolutionary strategy.

I hope that's not true... Hatchery salmon are inferior to native stocks. I'd much rather see a slow rebuild of native stock than pollute the gene pool with hatchery fish.

Hatcheries have their place, but native stocks need to be encouraged as well.

I've caught quite a few steelhead on the White Salmon and have never caught a wild one. They are going to stop stocking steelhead from what I hear in hopes that the wild fish will come back. I think it will be pretty dismal fishing for several years at best. Long term it will be a good thing, though.

I've heard that the current salmon runs on the Columbia are at about 6% of what they were before the dams went in.

It actually doesn't use very much electricity when compared to major appliances and HVAC.

Does anyone know why the Dams on the Columbia were built?

Just meant to make you think. And perhaps consider some alternatives had the dams not been built.
