It was a little punchy and holey, but got better and better as the afternoon wore! The ponds recently developed west of the sailboard launch are sweet...waist deep, solid winds - wow!
Speaking of sailboards, a girlfriend of mine lost her board and a sailboarder grabbed it for her while she was heading to shore. I just wanted to thank him profusely, and if you read this forum - THANK YOU!!!
It was better than nice to get wet and ride today, despite the cold...so much river to ourselves?! |

I like to kite in the old ponds, but haven't seen the new ponds yet, but have a question:
Would the new ponds be a good place for beginners, or would the possibility of a loose kite tumbling up onto the freeway be a good reason to exclude beginners from using the ponds? The waist deep water and wind (which is steadier than most sites in the Gorge) would make the ponds a tempting spot for beginners to congregate. Beginners are always looking for an alternative to the crowded and gusty Sand Bar.
Would this be a bad idea or a very bad idea? How close to the freeway could a kiter get his kite, while kiting the ponds?
Here is a link, showing interest in what I am referring to:

| Not a good place for beginners. The ponds are all up wind of rufus. That means theres a very large rock pile down wind and a f%$@ freeway on your right. Try the ponds at the Fort Stevens or Bridal Vail on east wind, shallow water for days |

I would never take any beginners to Rufus unless they have a jetski to follow them...the current there is too fast, launch can be sketchy and not a lot of space to recover if something goes wrong.
A great place for beginners to try out is Jones beach it's got a super long beach the wind is great...only bad is that there are quads and dirtbikers so just watch your lines.
Coast is great miles of beach...and you can get someone in a car to follow in case you need it _________________ Join the CGKA! Membership is only $10! Sign up at http://cgka.net/become-a-member/ |

Couldn't agree more.....
My 1st sess at Rufus ended with me doing the walk of shame for about a mile after nearly getting run over by a barge unable to launch the Slingy rep's T2 mid-channel on an 05 Glide. Boy, was he surprised I was a 2-time Kook champion that summer!
Even gave new meaning to the term 'Shartsuit' that day. Haha, just kidding, not really. _________________ Snapflugen de kinder spietzel. |

Ditto to Funktron, Bettyboarder, and JMatic.
However, by no means am I an "advanced rider", I've just had, and experienced enough kitemares that I know how I handle the fallout (up to this point anyway), I always look for let out spots before kiting in new places, and I always bring a six-pack of beer to pay my debts! |
