I have been looking to buy a SUP board but they are pretty expensive. I was wondering if I could use a similarly sized longboard because used ones are pretty cheap. It would be mostly for flatwater cruising. I was wondering if any of you out there have done this and how it worked out for you.

Thanks Smile

probably will not work. The SUP board generally have more volume and are wider.

Volume, provides the flotation, and width provides stability. Unless you weight nothing and get the biggest long board in existence it will not work Smile

Most longboards are too small even if the length is right the thickness and width are the problem. Old windsurfing boards over 11 ft work great for flatwater and you can find them for free or close to it in the gorge.

I also use an old Mistral windsurfing board. Super stable, super cheap, and if it's at all breezy, I can drop the daggerboard and hold my line without fighting the wind.
Downside is it's not very maneuverable, and it's heavy. Probably not as cool either, but I've always been a function over fashion type of guy anyhow.

Old sailboards are great. I still have my old 12' Mistral Pantera and SUP'd it for a year while I saved up for a real SUP, used an old wood double-ended paddle which I broke. PM me, I have access to a graveyard of sailboards and would love to see them in action again.

Going further with recycled windsurf gear, my friend here was very creative. He cut the top off of an old mast and hacked up an old computer motherboard. He cut the mast at a steep angle, cut and shaped the motherboard like the paddle and glued them together with resin. Used a canoe paddle handle and glued it on the top.

He recently SUP'd Short Sands on the last big Sunday (10' 14 seconds) and it was massive so this thing works like a gem (he was not on the Mistral however). I've used the paddle and you don't need to spend a lot of money just some effort.

The stability in a SUP comes from the width and volume which prone paddling longboards do not have. Most longboards range in width of 22-24". SUP's range from 27-34" and anything under 28 1/2" is very tippy unless you weigh very little or are an extreme balance monkey.

My current SUP boards are 29 to 30" in width and I weigh 195 lbs and they are great for my intermediate ability level. Good volumes to shoot for are 140 to 170 for surfing and cruising mix.

I would agree but if you are flat water crusing only and going to use a old sailboard the 11 to 12 ft and 190 to 220 lt volume is needed do to their width and vee bottom.
