where will you be kiting? There is no one kite that will get you up and ridingin every condition.
For example - if you want to ride at sauvies all the time then you will want a much bigger kite than if you decide you want to ride roosevelt.

there is another international forum for these kinds of delema..
look under Naish torches they look good from 2007 on info from other forum.
mostly slingy round these parts.. they are close buy..
If you listen to monkeys and unicorns then you won't want anything older than what it flies or its lethal.
find an instructer that you trust and ask them ....thats part of what your paying them for is thier prohofessionalism.
by the way I am not recommending naish over slingy or vice versa.
I usually bring 4-5 kites and a few boards to the launch. I think I am getting the area down finally but if I leave a kite behind sure as shizzlt thats the one I should be pumping.
range is great but having the correct size kite for the conditions is priceless... the kite flys with optimal behavior and performance...mmmmmm helps in the swell.
one kite ahh I think ocean rodeo makes that model.
go enjoy the wind don't fear it.
and 300 bucks should get you a lesson and then that info your asking for.

| You will not find a single kite out there that can be used in all winds. If you have not yet taken a lesson, go out and spend the cash to get it dialed in. Then take all that you have learned and make an informed decision on what you need. Your weight, local wind conditions, and ability will all play a huge role in your decision. If we have your weight then we can help tell you what size you will be using the most.

Chooch, he's 155lbs. Gotta stop reading while driving
If you're riding Hood River then maybe something like an 8m would work for you. You can probably make it work from about 20-30mph (roughly). Taking lessons is definitely key (for your safety and others') if you haven't already. The instructor should discuss all this kind of stuff with you.

I don't mean to be a downer but be prepared to shell out some more dough. For 800 or so dollars you should be able to get set up with some quality gear that will last you quite some time... If you spend 300 you will be frustrated because everything that you have is crap and you will replace all of it.
You will find people who will sell you crap and you may be able to get everything for all you need, harness, wetsuit, ONE kite and a crappy board but if you end up replacing it all... Is it really worth it.
My advise is INVEST in some lessons destroy their gear and then save your money if you really like it and get your own setup that is decent and will last you/not kill you.
Sorry to be debbie downer but you should be looking at 150-250 for 1-2 lessons (that would be super cheap) + 800 is for your gear which should get you 2 kites ect...

I got a kite I'll let go for $100. Took lots of abuse, my SO and I used it for learning. Some pro repairs and many homemade patches. It's a 9m Cabrinha Crossbow II. The bladder holds air for about 30 minutes, great for a body drag and pump up routine.
I'm serious

Use your $300 for a lesson and a trainer kite.
The more time you spend with the trainer, the easier it will be when you get on the water. You can fly the trainer through the winter even after it gets too cold to be in the water.
Save more money over the winter so you can get a decent water kite (or two) next year, and don't forget to budget for a board, wetsuit, harness, PFD, helmet, etc.

Whatever you do, don't take advice from someone that lacks a firm grasp of the english language. But he's right. You don't want anything older than what it flies (sic).

It... being a monkey or a unicorn.... for those who didn't grasp the English.
Sorry I don't practice my keystroke skills for the forum..
Also I am sure that plenty of people that don't speak English are more than qualified to answer your questions..
Monkeyboy /Unicorn lover you need your own forum.. your knowledge, insight and B.S. is endless and should be the center of your own forum.
Do I need to explain the meanings of close buy to reading is a skill..

I don't even know what the hell your talking about; I didn't even post in this thread till you sought fit to proactively call me out.? So show me a post about buying kites where my opinion contradicts everyone elses sentiments about old gear.
Yeah, that's what I thought.
