Here's what I observed in my short time in squamish...

Plenty of kiting going on. Everyone launches from the same spot. It's called the spit and it is about 5 miles on dirt/gravel roads from the town itself. You must pay $15 per day to use the spit, or $150 for a year long membership.

The water is noticeably colder than the gorge but I felt fine in a 4/3. If you are a beginner, or anybody else for that matter, and you end up downwind, attractive women on waverunners will come get you and bring you back to the launch area. This is a nice service that is covered by your fee.

There is a changing room on the spit and one can hire lessons there as well for $100/hr.

People there speak Canadian, ay, and the views are spectacular.

The spit has mats spread around to protect your kite and the same attractive women sweep those mats to keep them clean. There are also sandbags available to keep your kite secure when not in use.

Campgrounds are nearby with outhouses that are not too gross. The town itself is getting pretty developed as the olympics will be there in 2010. Travel time from portland is 6.75 hours including brief stops and 20 minute border crossing.

Overall, quite a nice scene and not too bad for beginners (even though there are a lot of obstacles downwind).

hmm makes the hr sandbar sound sub optimal. hr should consider the rescue jetski idea. Although there are usually a bunch of ski's out there anyway. In fact someone brought my board back to me today, thanks anon jet ski dude, I really appreciated the help. everyone has the wind die on them sometime, and the rescue ski is a nice idea. i'd pay a premium at the sandbar to have the service.
