For a long time I was doing pulling kite loops after reaching the apex of my jump and as one would expect ,they are pretty damn mild and allot of times seem like the equivalent of just sending the kite back really hard. So after beating myself up ofr being such a coward I started looping the kite right after I left the water.

It was only solid 11meter conditions when trying this but HOLLY SHIT!! It's like being shot out of cannon. The acceleration is really pretty amazing. After doing the "superman grabs water" thing I landed three of them in a row.

For those of you on the cusp of trying these, I would highly recommend just going for it. It is one of the coolest sensations I have felt KBing in a long time.

Hell ya Monkeyboy! Now you need to try them unhooked! It's way more fun and quite a bit easier!

A couple notes and words of caution.

- Don't throw them in gusty conditions until you're good at them.
- Start with moderate board speed and your kite at 11 or 1 until you're good at them.
- Realize that when things go wrong, your knees generally suffer.

Knees, ribs same diff.

I can really see how unhooked would be better. The first one that I ate shit on was basically cause my spreader bar hook was just in a weird position when the power hit me. It jerked me hard and started this spin a ma doodle that I couldn't recover from.

I'm telling ya guys, even though none of us are Reuban, you will definitely give yourself a little "FUCK YEAH" when you land one of these.

pdxmonkeyboy, you're freaking me out!

I'm scared poopless to loop while in the air! Guess I better try it close in on the Oregon side, huh? Laughing

Thanks for not making me feel like more of an idiot for trying a trick in the shipping channel. And for not laughing at me (at least to my face) Embarassed

OK, so if I wanna get started with my kiteloops, where should I be with the rest of my tricks? Do you loop the kite in the direction you were riding on the water or is it like sending it back more at the apex of the jump?

Screw the rest of your tricks for now, you don't need them to KL.

Cruise along with good speed and edge the kite back up to 11 or 12... POP out of the water as high as you can and as soon as you leave the water, crank hard with your back hand, stay focused, point your board down wind and land (bend your knees and concentrate on not ass checking).

Smile and repeat.

Ummm, not the 9m the 11 meter. I have heard/read that it is best to start them with a bigger kite in moderate wind conditions. The smaller the kite the faster it is going to move and the more force its going to generate..not to mention that things will happen FAST.

When first practicing downloops, I got ripped off the water when I cranked the 9m hard in high winds....

Any size kite is okay, so long as you're familiar with it.

You want to be just properly powered, maybe a little underpowered for your first try.

Another thing you can do is take your feet out of your straps and leave the board behind. This will allow you to pencil into the water. When you're getting fairly gentle landings, you can take the board with you. I started doing this with a skimboard when I was bored and realized it might help people learn kiteloops.

Be careful about doing powered kiteloops on big kites. Typically they're not fast enough to cushion the landing. As long as you're staying below 12ft or so you'll be fine, but if you do a fully powered laid out 20ft+ kiteloop and the kite's too slow to get above you it's gonna hurt pretty good and you can expect a spectacular crash.

When first practicing the slower you go the better. The more resistance you create against the kite at the start the higher and harder you'll fly. So at first just go slow and don't edge/pop the board super hard. Can even ride downwind a couple times while looping the kite to see what happens. Once you get some small 5-10ft high kiteloops down you can start going faster and popping harder.

Have fun!

That was some scary shit last night watching the barge approach you and not being able to tell if you were in it's path or not. It was damn close. It wasn't until the barge was almost right on top of you, and you weren't leaving a wake swimming away from it, that I figured you were OK.

When someone's down in the shipping lane and a ship is approaching it seems like we ought to go park our asses near the guy who's down with our kites at noon so we know the ship can see that someone is in it's path.

Or is there a better solution?

You can do that, or try to drag the guy out of the way.

Just not with foils. Very Happy
