Has anyone tried snow winging in the Hood River area?

I know the snow kite spots and days are pretty elusive, but I'm hoping that just like on the water there will be more spots that are good for winging on the snow.

Winging on snow is next to impossible...... not enough power to overcome the friction.
There's a lot of drag and you need a LOT of wind.

You also need snow conditions that are conducive to easy sliding.... hardpack, dust on crust... freshly waxed skis or snowboard.

Google 'winging on snow' and all you'll see is people sliding downhill with a wing in their hands. It's almost impossible on flat ground.

That said - I'll throw my wings in the van when I go snow kiting this winter..... just in case we get the perfect conditions.

Wings are great for low friction foiling on water - but you won't see anyone riding a wing on a surfboard or twin tip. Not enough power to overcome the friction.

Ice. That’s what we need. And a long board fitted with blades.

That is absolutely amazing. It is obviously not new but I definitely had not seen it before. I guess Kai Lenny isn't going to listen to ldhr on this one!

You need a buttload of wind, a flat area and well waxed skis to make it happen.

To be completely honest, it is somewhat fun to pull off, but by no means anywhere close to being comparable to snowkiting.

I'd bet a week's paycheck he had to get a jetski ride back out into the lineup. No way could he wing back upwind on a surfboard.

But most of the snow winging videos I've seen have been Canadians on frozen lakes with just a trace of new snow. I assume the powder all got blown away.

A few of us snow-wing often in Alaska. Brutal in deep powder if the winds aren't solid and if your not using a harness. Climbing is rough again in powder without a harness.

On ice is amazing, on 3 to 5" is amazing. Hard pack is a breeze.

Thanks for these, Dan. I bet the spring crust skiing is great for winging, too!

Love this chatter as I've been figuring it out. In appropriate conditions (that's the key), really cool, no strings attached! ha ha. These are facts not speculation. Pumped my 12 m rpm other day in great conditions at my spot, got up high and got nuked. decided between pumping 10m kite or try 6m wing. Pumped my 6m Cabrinha crosswing, right there at my van door, no postholing doing lines, no messing around with self launching and landing, no worry about that tree, and ripped everywhere up and down just as fast, right UNDER those power lines, right UNDER that irrigation setup, just skated around that fence. In perfect windblown pow with 2 new on top. Figured 8's up and down! C'mon you guys figure it out! Really fun. All about finding the right conditions, Those are here right now, go figure it out

Looking at all the videos on this thread, guess if you can't post a pic or video it doesn't or can't happen. Hmmm. I like my pow untracked

Rare cold spell up here on van island ... we tried winging with ice skates. Not enough wind, but even in small gusts could really feel it. That'd be a hoot on a big frozen lake with actual wind, crazy fast is my guess...probably too fast!

Last year we tried winging in snow, skis worked better than board, as could skate when needed. Saw some photos last week of wing snowboarding right at water's edge in Tofino, apparently worked great....lots of wind and the snow probably hard packed after a couple runs.

So, yes, doable if you put your mind to it. Bonus: way warmer on the fingers than the water in these winter temps. Sub 5c (mid 30s f) and the finger pain pretty much eliminates the fun factor for me.

So, I did google "winging on snow" like you advised, and I saw incredible fun happening with a wing on a flat lake in Canada in crappy conditions. The guy is a good coach and explains well. The gal went from total rookie to ripping in 15 minutes. When you get on appropriate rolly polly terrain, you can use traversing (gravity up vs down) combined with up/crosshill wind to get back to the top. Pull in when you feel power in your wing, go up, then down if it subsides, to keep apparent speed, yes, going UP the hill(think Poma Lift)! Capiche? Cut your traverses according to side/uphill wind direction on whatever pitch to ascend, preserve your snow and start making figure 8's, both up and down. If that's not enough fun for you, go pay money and stand in line at the resort! (ouch, sorry!)
Enough coaching for now, just a sample of what I've figured out so far, gimme a call, I give private lessons at a perfect venue and have all the toys, both kites and wings, so you can try this really fun NEW winter sport, before you go spend money on the gear. Thanks Victor 541 806 3050

Im a serious snowkiter. Been riding for nearly 20 years. Winging has grabbed me, grabbed me hard. LOVE the feel of it in the body.

I think others are right if the snow is deep it will burn the arms. But until then I'm just gonna play.

Today I rode on glare ice on a longboard with blades....that is an insane experience as well. So many great rides.
