Anyone ever kited in Squamish? Just watched a video on it and it looked sweet! Also can't beat the biking up there as well and wondering if it is worth the trip to kite up there.

Cheers!

World class scenery with the rocks in the backdrop BUT the water is the worst in the world. Cold, muddy water, just don't look down when you're out! Smile
It's worth a visit despite the water. The people are great, the scenery and the visit to Vancouver is worth your time.

"worst water in the world"?

worse than the brown trout at Sauvie Island?

kited there once, loved it. fan-like 9m wind. a slick behind the jetty. go for it. unique spot.

Squamish is worth the trip if you can handle the cold water. Until way out in the bay it's pure fresh river water that was snow only a few hours ago so it's freaky cold. You can kite out in to the bay to get to the warm salt water but the best part of Squamish is boosting in the "honey hole", pure flat water with a decent size audience feet away.

Here's a vid of the Richman brothers ripping it up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssQ-CTqMxXA

There is also an active hydrofoil racing scene there if that's what you are in to.

That is actually Brown backed Corn trout. The corn could be locally Sauvie's grown and it could be either Yellow or White.

Razz

If you do make the trip, put aside some time to climb the Squamish Chiefs... (the big rock faces you can see from the highway). Great views from the top and you can freak yourself out looking over the vertical drops... don't slip!

Heading north this Friday for a week with stops in Vancouver, Bellingham, Squamish & Whistler. It's mostly a mountain biking trip but will have wing gear with me.

I was wondering about nabbing a wing session at Squamish but it seems like a hassle.

Anybody launched near Vancouver?

Nice! I haven't been winging up there yet but I hear plenty of folks are riding in Kitsalano/Jericho beach - not great for kiting with light winds and crowds but could be pretty excellent with a big wing

Since they removed the Spit road to help the baby salmon it's now $50 CDN per day to launch at the Spit. You have to take a small zodiac ferry to get there and back unless it's low tide.

Lots of kite foilers and wingers out at Spanish Banks every sunny day in Vancouver. The launch is at Tolmie St. and it gets a 9-12 knot thermal any sunny day.

If the Squamish thermal is fully setup you can get decent wing sessions at Porteau Cove for free. No cold water either.

I've heard of people wing surfing Alta Lake, but don't have much info about it.
You might be able to wing on Green Lake but it's stupid cold.

It's the same thermal that drives up the valley:
Porteau -> Squamish -> Alta -> Green

The Vancouver thermal is mostly created by the heat of the city next to the cooler ocean water.

Thanks Slappysan! Your mention of Porteau lead us to Porteau Cove marina for a perfect afternoon of SUPing and winging. There was room to park my car + 22' trailer. The northside is wind protected for SUP and lounging in the sun. Water was warm and the wind fan steady in the low 20's. Thumb's Up
