Wed Mar 09, 16 10:13 am Heading for Tampa Bay, Florida Mid April |
|
|
Any recommendation for locations to kite around greater Tampa Bay area? I'm heading there for work mid April and plan to bring the kiting gear. Looking for a location that will give me the best chance for kiting/wind. Seems like there are a lot of choices but not sure which are would be best: Honeymoon bay to the north, Treasure Island to the south, or something else.

I was in the area last winter in Feb. I kited Skyway North and South. The two spots are 5 min. away from each other, but give you exposure to all wind directions. And the wind direction changes often. It is shallow water 10-14m kinda spot. There are always people kiting there, so you won't be alone..........

You'll need your biggest kite.
No need for a wetsuit just swimtrunks and a rashguard.
Skyway North if it is Eastt or NE, They are usually gone by
this time of year. Treasure Island kinda sucks. For some
reason that area tho' it is huge, lacks in wind. A good place
North Bch Fort Desoto or a really good place for sea breezes
all the way across the bay at Bahia Bch, west afternoon seabreezes.
I haven't kited
Honeymoon Island since 1999 so I don't know the vibe
there recently. Probably it will be 14-17 knots max from the
west in the afternoons I'll bet most anything. Lucky if you get
NE or East, it'll ONLY blow this at daybreak... Skyway North ONLY.
Sunshine skyway south is good place for West but it is usually
completely underwater. Check tides. Low is good. Tons of places
to go. But you may have to drive. Fort Desoto South is also REALLY
good on a Southerly or east wind. Gulf side of St. Petersburg Bch
IS probably your best bet for West winds. Just south of the Don Cesar Hotel.
Probably where you will see almost everybody Kiting on west winds.
Hot, Humid, you were warned.

I'm from Tampa Bay, here is my recommendation:
On any N NW W and SW winds, kite Ft. Desoto State Park or Fred Howard State Park. On any N NE E or SE wind, kite the Sunshine Skyway Bridge North exit.
Also, it can indeed get windy. More days are light wind, but there are actually plenty of days where the 9 and 12 are the biggest you'll use.
There are videos of me kiting Tampa Bay in one of my YouTube videos found here -

enjoy the warm water, you won't need a suit for the rest of 2016 (well maybe in December).

Thanks a ton. I'm staying right in the middle of all these places, should be a quick 15 minute drive to many. Thanks again!

Thanks everyone for the advice. I was able to ride last Saturday and Sunday at North Skyway Bridge. The wind blew out of the NE/E the entire weekend. Good times!
