first of all, I know this is a gorge forum but i believe many folks on here have been to cabarete and i haven't been.

second, kiteforum.com is down for some reason

anyway, my money-no-object sister and hubby are going to cabarete to take kiteboarding lessons. any input from folks who have been there on best place to take lessons from, good hotels to stay in, places and people to avoid, any recent scams, that type of thing. yes, i will do a search after this post

Cabarete is a lot of fun, however the shore-pound and insane chop on the inside can be like hearing nothing but the double-kick-drums at a Tool concert for hours. In short, it can be brutal. I can think of a lot of other places that I would prefer to learn to kiteboard. I'm really not trying to be a buzz-kill, but it also can be really crowded...like being in the pit at Metallica at the Monsters of Rock at the Kingdome in August of 1988. You might want to tell your sister to borrow Richard Hallman's helmet.

I have been to Cabarete twice, and loved it both times.
I stayed at Extreme Hotel ($60US/night) and Kite Excite is right there at the hotel and is a really good company.
The wind was nice and steady, I think it is a great place to learn. Gets you used to being in the ocean too. SI is way choppier than the inside at Cabarete, but they also can get double high wave breaks, so really its up to the swell. both times I was there it was knee high shore break.

Kite Excite will also do a off-shore boat session, where they take you out into the ocean and use the radio helmet, so there is no walking up and down the beach.

You can do nice short downwinders there
There is plenty to do on non-wind days too.

Some tips:
Eat at Ali's Surf Camp, great food
Don't let the Porters touch your bags at the airport, they will try and stiff you for a good $10 for moving your bags 5ft.
Don't get into a taxi or motoconcho unless you ask them how much for the ride, they WILL stiff you for a lot of $$ if you don't.
Ask a local how much it should cost to travel somewhere, to confirm your not getting ripped off by the Taxi's
