A friend of mine is looking to have a hip replacement surgery, he's a fit and active person in his 40's (and really stoked about getting into kitesurfing). From what he found out so far looks like the surgery options he has will take him out of sports indefinitely. Do you know a sport-oriented specialist who could do a consult?

I cannot recommend a specialist but I do know a couple of kiters who kill it with their bionic hips.

I've got a 50+ year old tennis teammate who had hip surgery/replacement...I think he was back on the tennis court about 8 months later. I'll try and get a doctors name so you can pass it along.

OHSU ortho. I wouldn't do anything without having a consult with one of their bone docs.

Find out where Dr. Charlie Petit from Cascade Orthopedics in The Dalles is now practicing in Portland. He lectures other orthos on hip replacement and was trained at the world renowned Steadman -Hawkins clinic in Vail. V

If he is that young he should consider hip-resurfacing over hip re-placement. Not all orthos do the re-surfacing procedure. It does offer a return to an active athletic life with virtually no restrictions. I have been very happy with having both mine done 8 years ago. Still going strong at 62 years old and no hip issues since the operation.

I've got a homie who learned to kite in his early-to-mid forties on his third hip replacement (third one in the same hip--he does not have three legs).

There is still plenty of opportunity to get your shred on. Don't give up hope!

Dr. Mark Colville @ Rebound orthopedic clinic in Rose Garden aka Moda Center or any orthopedist there. They fix Blazers and Winterhawks.
Whoever will do it, he needs to make sure it's gonna be stainless due to be spending plenty time in the water.

I'm finding myself in a similar situation. I had hip arthroscopy a couple of years ago for Femoral acetabular impingement, but the bone already had significant signs of arthritis. Dr. Petit gave me 5-10 years before needing a replacement.

A friend recently had "Stem Cell therapy" done on his knees, and its supposed to be helpful for hips too. I'm looking into it, but I'm concerned about the snake oil factor: newish, not many doctors performing it (but Emory University does), not covered by insurance...

I'm hopeful as it would in theory be able to push out or side step the eventual need for a full replacement, but the jury is still out for me on this one.

Any information on this treatment for hips/joints would be useful. My buddy is still in the too soon to tell phase.

Tell your friend to go to Bali...
He can kitesurf until he can't walk and then have his hips replaced at the Royal Bali Hospital.
While he's there he can have Lasik eye surgery, be treated for hair loss, adenoid removal, and his wife can have her boobs augmented and vagina reconstructed.

Alternative therapies include prolozone injections. This is injection with medical grade ozone into joints. canbyclinic.com Naturoath Jennifer Tuttle provides this. You can check her website as well as google prolozone, look for an article by Dr Frank Shallenberger for more detailed info. I've had this done on my back and shoulder and it was quite helpful. I'm 56 yr old. Relatively inexpensive, not covered by insurance. Also, prolotherapy, platelet rich plasma and stem cell therapy is available at corewellnesspdx.com Tyna Moore, ND in Portland. I've had prolotherapy from her that was effective as well. With hip joints, she says that since they are major weight bearing, they can break down fast, to the point where prolotherapy is not effective. Not sure if she has used stem cells on any hip patients yet. Worth a call. Also the Columbia Pain Mgt Clinic in Hood River has just started offering stem cell therapy. It is part of Regenex.com program. Cost is around $6000. Docereclinic.com is another website with info on stem cells. If he has to get the surgery, check medibid.com for pricing.

Plus one for Dr Tyna Moore. Drtyna.com
I blew up my knee last fall. I did a complete tear of the MLC, multiple tears to the meniscus and a partial tear of the ACL. I met with a couple of orthopedics prior to talking with Dr Moore. The orthopedics recommended surgery. I would have been non weight bearing for 2 months and then 6 months of rehab with a 80% successes rate. After one round of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma injections) with Dr Moore and extensive rehab I was back on the water in 5.5 months and now, 7.5 months after the injury, I am nearly 100% with no surgery. With any joint injury I would call her first. She is very good at what she does.
