Nope. Semantics I guess... a potential hindenburg from the kite shooting too far forward will only get worse sheeting out. No question there.
Hindenburg via backstall needs sheeting out. Different reactions for different scenarios. Ive always called overflying and kite falling a hindenburg. I think backstalling then crashing to the ground is a lot different than overflying, ( i call it dropping your kite, lol) but I guess if the end result is a kite down its also called a hindenburg.

some times the reason a kite hindenbergs alot all of a sudden is because either
the back lines or the front lines have really really stretched out compared to the other set of lines. Check 'em and make sure they are the same length. Not all manufacturers lines are created equal

A Hindenburg occurs when the kite has reached slack line between 10:30 and 1:30 and the leading edge drops, sheeting out will not help. In contrast, when a kite “backflyes” or stalls the kite is open to the wind and will fly forward as soon as you let the bar out.

Hindenburging is much more common with kites that have balance issues. If the leading edge is too heavy the leading edge drops as the lines go slack and the wind hits the top of the kite. This drops the kite to the water beside you. If the kite is “parked in neutral” at 12:00 you can expect a lot of hindenburging in the gorge. If you do it just right at 12:00 you can entangle yourself in your own lines as the kite tumbles to the water before it powers up and kills you.

Kiting got it’s reputation as a dangerous sport from people flying their kites onto slack lines, hindenburging, and then getting yanked 100 yards by a kite that powered up straight down wind of the rider as it reached the end of the lines. Since early kites did not depower when deep in the window kiters got killed.
In the gorge there is nothing neutral about 12:00. We call it up, not neutral. Never park a kite at 12:00 in the gorge. You can avoid hindenburging by turning the kite away from slack lines before they go slack. Once the lines are slack, you missed your chance.

If the winds speed drop below your kites minimum flight speed your kite will fly onto slack line if you do not turn it away. If it’s near 12:00 and it’s leading edge is heavy, it will hindenburg. In light winds I turn the kite continually. If I need to keep the kite in one location to get the board on my feet I will wiggle the kite( pull left, then right, then left, then right, turning back just before the kite starts to move forward .

Trying to pass the bar through your center lines in the water is extremely dangerous. You need to fully disconnect and pass the bar through the split in the front lines. You can expect the steering lines to wrap the bar and give you big excitement as you try to get organized after the pass through. I have successfully done this three times and I will not try it again. The chance of amputating a finger in a loop of line is way too big. Instead I fly the kite to shore. Even with a double roll you can still fly the kite. The steering lines will have more tension then normal so you must keep the bar 4 inches further out to allow the kite to fly.

Mark, thanks for the clarification on passing the lines through the middle. The four inches of extra sheeting makes sense as I can tell the kite still wants to fly with the inverted lines. I felt like it just had less depower and it felt like it wanted to turn quicker. More feedback in general with the inverted lines. thanks

Negative. Not an answer at all. Ur fun e.

Thanks for the great dialog from everyone, thats what makes this forum great, the mindmelding. Sounds like some folks were confused between what hindenburging and backflying is.

Mark, excellent explanation and wisdom sharing.

Cheers to all...

One last point.
Some times when a kite hindenburgs, it hits the end of the lines before it hits the water.
In this case you should be holding the bar in a full turn. If the kite is on the right side pull left. If it’s on the left side pull right. The full turn reduces the force when the slack is suddenly gone and turns the kite out of the dive and away from the water.
