edited so blowhard's response makes sense. (figured he'd be out riding) I was just spouting OT about my Saturn anyway.

no have not ,but if you are moving it keeps moving ,just don't stop until you can move again in 2 wheel drive after you moving the 4 wheel kicks in again.

kinda sucks really, I would imagine they will come up with somthing for the mudder crowd ,, Confused someday

But gives you the mileage with great slippery road traction which is fine for the wife, she's not into high speed cornering or rippin it up in the snow

and it doesn't bother me in my F250 or my tracker. Laughing

First thing we did was to drive it home in a snow storm no problems, next we found a muddy road and stopped in the steepest section and punched it ,it kept going until my wife was objecting firmly,we then drove up the local hill in 16-18" wet heavy snow .
I find it roadworthy safe and stable
but I doubt beach ready

If I was looking for a smaller Rv I would look at the diesel vans mentioned
or pickup and canopy/camper
diesel Fords are cheap and reliable

subies are the best get to the mountain cars, but in the rain they're no fun. My f250 gets 21 mpg with the camper on it. Doesn't get stuck, but sucks in the city.

My old vanagon was a nightmare in the snow but a great live/play rig. I think your wife would be hating it sleeping in any car. Have you thought of an AWD minivan? Decent mileage, roomy and some are VERY comfortable to drive.

All in all a truck with some aero mods to it is your best bet.

I had a 2000 dodge grand caravan and it was only frontwheel drive, but I put studs on it and it was a BEAST in the snow! Couldnt be stopped. They make GCs in awd too so I imagine they would kick even more ass and like monkey said LOTS of room to stretch out in and very comfy to drive. Or just keep the truck and do something like this....

My wife and I both own Subarus. I have a Legacy GT and she has a Turbo Forrester. We have owned 3 Forresters. When I was surfing on a weekly basis the Forrester was handy for the storage space and being able to change in the back hatch area. When I started kiteboarding at Jones being able to drive to the water is a plus especially on a hot day. Last winter we had four feet of snow at our house. We chained up because of old tires but our car got us everywhere no problems. What I like the most is the car has front and side impact airbags.

Two things I have learned:if you want to run synthetic oil so you don't have to change oil as often start from the beginning. My first forester died around 175k because I was running synthetic after 100k. The seals fail when you do this late in the game. Secondly save money for tires. You have to replace all four tires at the same time because of the all wheel drive transmission. About sleeping in the car:get an extra foam mattress cover for the back it will help alleviate the bumps.

if your driving a car with a turbo in it, you should be running with full synthetic from day 1. Much more heat and ware on the car with a turbo.... but so worth it...

That would be pretty interesting getting in and out of that tent.
