I've been buying bulk 1/4" Dyneema line locally but that's not really big enough. The replacement rope sold by RE seems to be about the same.

Anyone here using 3/8" Dyneema line? Not sure that would fit through the spreader bar hole - but fairly certain 5/16" will fit.

Seems to me bigger is better when using a slider rope!

1/4" 6mm 8,600 Tensile Strength (lbs.)
5/16" 8mm 13,700
3/8" 9mm 19,600

the hole is 5/16 wide.
i use the RE replacement sold by Windance for $5.00.
it lasts a 100+ sessions for me.
i 've never broken one - they start to get a little frayed after 100 sessions and i replace it. guessing it would last another 50 sessions if i did not replace.

I've never had one break either - but know of one breakage that did happen - and the guy said the rope wasn't frayed and was shocked that it broke. But I don't know what size rope he was using - or the rope material.

Check out the difference in tensile strength I posted earlier - quite a boost in strength from 1/4" to 5/16" !!

Sure wish Windance & RE would provide the 5/16"/8mm size - but pretty sure that's not the case. Plz correct me if I'm wrong!!

I was shredding through my ropes (with a Dynabar). Especially when there was the quick release thing on one side. I got rid of it and now go with 2 ropes and 2 rings and keep them waxed. Much slower wear and tear now. Thumb's Up

I was very happy with Bowstring Wax (see link). But then I returned to our hot Mexican winter beach where the high heat caused the wax to turn into sticky honey-like that sucked up all the sand. A few hours later the dyneema lines were ruined and needed immediate replacement:

Go to a marine supply store and get a piece of AmSteel Blue rigging like this one:

https://www.fisheriessupply.com/samson-rope-blue-amsteel-blue

I can't remember what diameter I got, just make sure it's small enough so that it still fits through the Ride Engine harness.

Those prices are kinda high. For example, I just bought a spool of 9/16" Amsteel blue (not for kiting!!!) at Englund Marine on the central coast for about $1500-1600 cheaper than this website.

If you are near a trusted purveyor of rigging such as Englund, just take your harness in the store and talk to the resident rigging guru. I guarantee you will learn something, and you'll probably walk out of there with a better slider rope than you had before...

By the way, I just made a Nak-style replacement slider rope for my dynabar out of doubled-up 1/8" amsteel blue, finished off with an oysterman's knot ala G-man. It looks sweet, but as the wind has been dead for the past 2 weeks, I haven't been able to test it out yet.

It would be great if you could provide pics of your DIY slider rope.

How is your doubled-up 1/8" rope a better solution than a single 5/16"/8mm 13,700 tensile strength (lbs.)?

This stuff is the best!
https://www.fisheriessupply.com/new-england-rope-sts-wr2-sk-78-synthetic-life-line

I also twist a rappel ring from REI on it so that it slides smoother and slower.

Hi Unbob,

Here’s a pic of my Nak-style double-layer slider rope, uninstalled for ease of viewing.

Advantages as I see it:

It’s made from a scrap from building a replacement depower line.
I already have a bulk spool of 1/8” Amsteel blue.
Double-layer ropes wear better than hollow braid. You are essentially making a kernmantel rope when you double-splice. This prevents the rope from squishing flat under load, and a round rope fits the groove in the sheave of my dynabar hook really well.
The eyesplice allows me to secure one end with a shackle, which means I only have to tie one knot—less opportunity to slip and add slack to the system.

Re: tensile strengths, I think there’s a natural tendency to overthink things. We are kiting, not making dynamic crane picks... The line in the photo should part at about 5K lbs., but since we’re pulling on a bight on a slider rope you effectively halve any load on it. Unless I gain a lot of weight, I think 5K lbs is plenty! What’s the tensile strength of your kite lines?

Ultimately, there are a gazillion ways to skin this cat. Whatever folks decide to do, make sure to inspect your gear often...

I was using two 1" SS rings on my rope. But now no longer needed since North & Slingshot have their slider rope chicken loop products. I use the North and it works great!

I got to test it, finally... Smile

It worked great. Minimal stretch, plus it slid much more smoothly thru my dynabar hook’s sheave than the old piece of 1/4” or 5/16” hollow braid I had been using. No visible wear...

Happy rigging to all.
