Seems pretty ridiculous to me on a bunch of levels...

If the county or whoever is in charge there really wanted to improve this stretch of beaches, they’d kick out the bums, replace that low-end grocery store next to the poop plant with Whole Foods, poison all of the feral cats, and charge $5 to park.

It also seems quite ridiculous that a buncha ostensibly health-conscious folks would get their undies in a bunch about having to walk a little further while carrying their gear. I have to walk about a mile at my local spot. Uphill both ways!

It’s important to keep in mind that not everywhere on this planet is as kite-friendly as the Hood. Those who get out to the South Pacific upon occasion might recall that one of the best kite access spots on Mo’orea was shut down a few years back. Mostly because of issues with kiters being dicks to other beach users. Friendly reminder, since dick season is getting ready to go off here in the PNW, that being a dick can get access shut down.

I know it seems like a not so smart thing to do, but kiting is a problem for locals from time to time.
You've got to remember that everywhere you are allowed kite is a gift and not an expectation.
If we are nice to everyone we kite around they will be nice to us.
I was kiting at a secret spot in Maui and I was approached by a guy, local. He got on me about where I was kiting and asked if I knew the rules.
I knew right away that I needed to be respectful, quiet and thought about how bad I would get my ass kicked by my buddies if I blew it.
I listened to him. I apologized to him. I told him thanks and offered him a free lesson. He relaxed and realized that I was ok and not a dick. I've been a dick and it doesn't work out as well.
Cheers,

I have never seen the Maui county government nor the Hawaii State government do the right thing. You can always count on them to do the wrong, most corrupt thing. I signed the petition but that will not effect the decision they make. That being said, I doubt they will make the parking situation any worse than it is. My only reason for liking to park super close, like at teach beach, is that there is more crime on Maui than any other place that I have ever seen. The only reason that I do kite at teach beach (aka dog shit beach) at all is that I can see my car. If we have to park in a way that you can not see your car it will make the already rampant car break-ins at Kanaha even worse. Right now the MPD seems to have no concern with cars getting broken into and stolen. They dont seem to do anything about it on any part of the island, including Kanaha. All in all, I am going to guess and hope that the new situation at Kanaha will be an improvement. More grass and showers for the kiters would be nice.
