Forrest, I hope you've atleast flown these kites yourself to be making these kinds of statements. |

i dont think you suck for doing this forrest, i think it sux that someone put you into a position where you felt you had to do this. i mean, really monnie? come on, i have old naish X3's and i wont even give them away because i dont want anyone hurting themselves. i sure as hell wouldn't sell them to some unsuspecting beginner, let alone lying about them and calling them "beginner friendly". wtf |

MagicMaker: perhaps you should have read Monnie's post before berating him further. He does not refer to them, as you (or Forrest) suggest, as "beginner friendly".
I think its interesting that neither of you politely informed Monnie the post may be misleading. Instead you jump to swearing at him and calling him a liar.
Even more interesting that you claim as your defense maintaining a good reputation for kiters. *looks for an irony emoticon* |

I also think this is crazy to think there isn't a legit market for this gear or that new folks getting into the sport shouldn't use it under any circumstances.
My first kite was a brand new AR3.5 9M, I had a TON of respect for that kite and only took it out in appropriate winds and locations. Dozens of kites later my current kite is a 11M T2, and I still have a ton of respect for the power of the kite.
I think the worst thing for the sport is all this press that ANYONE can kiteboard and it is soooo easy and sooo much safer with this latest-new-ultrasafe-gear -- the sport still has more serious dangers than the average weekend warrior sport (tangle your bridle, then wrap the line around your foot and watch what happens).
Forrest, I understand your concern -- we need to educate total beginners and protect the sport/access, one major "hole" is second-hand gear with zero instruction or education.
However, I think education is the right approach. Picking the right location and conditions are probably MORE important than having a 2008 kite. Unfortunately, the Gorge may not be the right location or conditions for 90% of beginners once you factor in the crowds. |

| There are plenty of people hurting themselves and others by getting yarded into obstacles and such on 2008 kites. You don't need a 2001 kite to hurt yourself. And indeed, bridles make depower easy, but they don't make the kite itself much safer. I had a simple twig stuck in my bridle once on launch and it was everything short of sending the kite into a death spiral. Depower doesn't mean much when you're kite is spiraling. And bridles don't make self-rescuing or fixing an inverted/bow-tied kite any easier either |
