Laird does know how to kitesurf.
Back in 1999 he visited Newport, where I lived, and I watched him kite in overhead surf. With an old wipika and a directional.
It was one of the reasons I got into kiting.

Hi all,
Laird Hamilton was one of the very first kiteboarders on Maui.
He pioneered kitesurfing with two-line foil kites, then reel bars and foil boards. Laird has been there and done that, before anyone really knew what kitesurfing was.
Aloha,
David

Laird was kiteboarding at Agate beach, maybe it was 99 or earlier, with some others (Cory?) and they had a film crew on the beach, jetskis, and a big cube truck. Gabrielle and Laird had a huge white Cadillac, and she actually got into a parking dispute with my friend Tony. They were crashing a lot and looked a bit out of control in the 25 knots of wind. We were windsurfing, and had fun buzzing around them thinking kiteboarding was a joke...Little did we know what was to come, once the equipment improved!

Laird was cool and hung around and shot the bull for a while afterwards.

HAHA, that's funny Chris... Razz

I was thinking the same thing when I was watching the X-Games.

Probably the same reason when Shannon Best started kiting and Chuck Patterson, WHY, didn't other wakeboarders jump on the bandwagon....

-Scott Byerly, the Bonifays, Darin Shapiro, Gator, Eric Ruck..(wisco-boy), etc..?

Back in '98 or so he was telling me that he was trying out a little kiteboarding. I reckon he didn't have much time to spare tho' to really concentrate on it

yep...

i think I was reading on best's site about Darin making Shannon do the "s-bend" over and over again so he could learn it. So, I'm sure they shared thoughts on kiting. Confused
