Sun Sep 20, 20 7:41 am Any Surf Foil advice ? |
|
|
Hi Everyone,
Any advice on paddle in surf-foiling Oregon waves ? Thinking about a wing that would work for both surf and kite, and getting kite and surf specific boards. Seems like a foil could be fun for surfing OR waves.
Haven't been on this forum for a while, and it's good to see it's still going strong. Thanks for the advice
- Chris

Depends on the size of the waves you are looking at. Most popular kite foils are smaller and faster than the typical surf foil. The smaller kite foil will work for really big waves but for small and medium waves, you generally need a bigger foil than is ideal for kiting.

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense.
Anyone have experience with paddle in foiling on the coast ?
Kai makes it look so fun, but I'm sure that isn't a realistic expectation of what my experience would be.
I was thinking of purchasing this set up:

Slingshot gear is a good option: economical, works fine, all the parts are interchangeable so upgrades are easy, lots of used gear around. A bit heavy, but that doesn't matter all that much short of high end performance.
I sup/surf foiled slingshot for 2 seasons, since moved on to GoFoil as I got a good package deal. I used an H2/Infinity 84 combo ... big wing for small waves, then the H2 when it got bigger. The 76 is right in between and I'd recommend it as an excellent 1 wing quiver. My buddy used that for his single foil wing for last 2 years, ripping on surf foil and wind foil. (now moved to Axis)
The 76 will work decent on kite too, though slower than dedicated kite foils. You'll have a much smaller kite than normal, otherwise overpowered quick. The H2 is optimal --- another buddy bought one for $100, as well as H4 (manta/bat wing) which is a lot of fun for kiting too. They go on sale regularly, black friday coming up.
Bit of a learning curve, but once on it you'll be stoked ... makes marginal surf super fun.

The Skywalker/Infinity 76 is a great starting set up. I used it for a year before growing out of the board. I still really like the wing; you'll eventually want to step up to a taller mast (28" or 30"). The most important element is finding the right waves. I've finally got that dialed. The learning curve was pretty brutal for me, but the payoff is worth it. PM me and I'll give you my two cents.

Anyone have experience SUP- or surf- or wind-foiling with the Cabrinha Varial Large setup? https://www.cabrinha.com/collections/foils/products/hi-rise-varial-large
Claims are made it's a crossover but a local shop expert I spoke with believe it may not be suitable for wind-foiling or SUP-foiling downwinders for me (I'm 6'4", 180#).
As a newb I'm under the naive impression that I could get a foilset to kite-foil on (medium Varial wing on Slingy Converter) yet swap for a large enough front wing to wind- and maybe SUP-foil with by using the right windsurf/SUP hybrid (JP Foil Slate or Starboard Hyper Nut).
After borrowing a proper windfoil setup for a few sessions, I'm now focused on learning kitefoiling but haven't bailed on my fantasy configuration. (Actually the real fantasy is having as much time on the water as I'd like...).

Hybrid boards....my experience is mixed, they work but never quite perfect...so you have a board that does everything fairly well but nothing really well. So it's a tradeoff. Good option for travelling, but if you're are really going for it, then ideal to get a purpose built one used/cheap, then look to upgrade later.
Hybrid foils....maybe better luck in some ways. A smaller surf foil will be fun under the kite and also fun in bigger, faster waves. But not in tiny surf. A wing big enough to sup foil or downwind, will be really hard to keep in the water kiting, and painfully slow. At 1500cm2, that cab looks pretty similar to the SS 76.
This Foil Data google docs is really useful for comparisons. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17xbTGEWSVeRhnYb_4vz_Gmby8UnrDys7Q1iB-6rC6F4/edit?fbclid=IwAR1GgMuvw0L6FKIuycKPk9kxe0wNXs4SNxJ1wk0VNxWis6u1cQETmbOsp8Q#gid=0

Thanks; the Varial Large does seem similar to the Infinity 76 in area. I windfoiled with the Infinity 84 and sailors on the beach said it's quite big for most windfoiling (which I felt). I'd try my friend's Wizard with my Varial Medium but sadly his Infinity 84 is basically welded in because he's left it bolted on so long.
On the hybrids I won't debate the (common) view on them doing anything well. I basically traded an Angry Swallow (my travel board) for a newer Converter with little cost. I think the JP Foil Slate would fit my windfoil & SUP-foil needs while making a board adequate for my wife to doddle around with a sail on (I won't say she's windsurfing yet), but the investment ($1200 at best) is not attractive, and the more time I windfoil the slower I'd get good at kitefoiling (the benefit would be launching locations - but those suckers are unwieldy!).

Shred...hehe, I won't even get started on wing foiling then. Oops guess I just did. Another toy in the mix, has pros and cons relative to kite and windfoil options. I think its easiest option for non wind chasing spouses...hoping to entice my wife into the water some day.

Hey Boardrider, any updates on your surf foil experience? Came across this thread while searching for a Varial Large front wing but actually bought a SIC Marlin convertible and been having a blast windfoiling on the Varial Medium wing on it. No wing yet but the board feels like it'll be good for learning that and Viento or Hatch downwinders on.
