This Thread gives me hope. In the future, with more viruses coming out of China, there is no question that we will need to end tourism completely. This means that all people must stay in their own County or zip code. Any travel outside of that County or zip code, should only be allowed for absolute necessity. Any violation there of should incur a penalty of being locked up in jail with other infected persons.

We could still all watch pictures of locals at OBX, or Baja, or Peru, or Rufus. So it would not be that much of a sacrifice.

We all hate tourist. They are to blame for everything bad that happens in your locality, and they are responsible for nothing good that happens in your locality. This is the opportunity to end the disease of tourism all together, and provide a much brighter future for kiteboarding and all Outdoor Sports where no one is allowed to travel to partake in those Sports.

I think it's more likely that the next virus will come out of my wetsuit. I just took it out last night... it was not nice.

I think it’s great that someone gets to go kite. Good on ya!

Meanwhile, in Hood River:

"Today, Hood River County is reporting our fifth case of COVID-19 identified in a local resident. This person is not associated with any other cases, has not been hospitalized and is self-isolating in their home. Hood River County Health Department is in the process of notifying close contacts of the infected person. This case is an employee of Rosauers Supermarket in Hood River who was last at work on April 19th. Hood River County Health Department remains in close contact with the facility, infected person, and the identified contacts as the investigation continues. For the protection and privacy of this individual no further information will be released per ORS 433.008(2) and 433.138. Please remember that if you were in close contact with this person we will be contacting you directly. Please be aware that you are no more likely to have contracted the virus while visiting Rosauers than if you have been anywhere else out and about in the community. We will not be releasing any other Protected Health Information including additional dates and times the person was working.

There are unidentified and asymptomatic cases in our community. Please stay home, stay safe, and maintain social distancing. Do not go to work if you have any even mild cold or flu like symptoms. Stay home until your symptoms have been gone for at least seventy two hours without medication. More cases will undoubtedly be identified in the coming days as increased testing in our community continues."

What exactly does

“This person is not associated with any other cases”

mean? Does this imply they don’t know how it was contracted? Or that the person was not in contact with anyone who has tested positive? Or ?

No idea. But if you work at a grocery store you are in contact with innumerable surfaces at the very least, and depending on your position, possibly hundreds of people per day. Several of us have noticed that the Rosauers staff has not been masking up.

This does feel like a "buckle up" moment to me in "sleepy little 'Covid free' Hood River." The employee's spouse works at Cardinal Glass, which employs a hundred'ish folks in an assembly line type environment.

Why Outside Air is Safe and Park Closures Should End

"Governors Inslee, Cuomo, and Newsom have all stated that in dealing with the COVID-19 crisis it is essential to "follow the science." It is time that they follow their own advice, reopening all the parks and nature areas, including the restoration of all parking facilities and access."

Seems like a pretty racist / elitist comment to assume viruses come from China.

If this is sarcasm, it's very bad. if you're stating opinion it seems so closed minded...it's a waste of time and words to rebut this stupid argument which is why exactly no one paid attention to your post and said anything...nor did anyone congratulate your sarcasm. Please refrain from racist comments and bigotry towards China on a kiteboarding forum and please share some intelligent wisdom, which neither your nor Obakarama seem to have.

Close your eyes and imagine YOUR very small imaginary home town getting multiple cases of deadly disease because some sick DB was too cool to stay at home (Hood River? Portland? Seattle?), maintain space, or wear a mask. This would amount to a disaster for any small town. Sun Valley comes to mind.

Closing access to non-locals encourages compliance with the Governor's stay at home order, which have been relatively successful to this point. What a tragedy to prematurely relax and let our guards down and stimulate a second wave of infection. Or a first wave.

Rock Creek is small. You can really safely launch only one kite at a time. Everybody else is forced into small areas in order to avoid lines. Poseurs doing nothing other than standing around telling stories in close proximity, no masks. It's worse than going to the supermarket, where at least SOME people are wearing masks and trying to stay 6' apart.

On a lighter note, Fury Road is the greatest action film of all time. Nothing else comes close.

Or they could have simply closed RC like everybody else did and waited until Wasco County passes the criteria for opening as per President and Govenor's criteria.

Then when stay at home orders have been lifted they might have developed new safety protocols for access.

Instead now they are simply publicizing that Rock Creek is now open for business to locals. The whole show me your zip protocol won't work. Half the homes there are second homes where people have two zip codes. What are you going to do, ask the Sheriff to come down and ask everybody for ID?

Reckless!!!

I just wonder what was the percentage of Germans who supported Hitler before WW2.

@Nak - Sorry, not buying the sarcasm. lotta explosive diarrhea about anti-tourism and localism to save the day. http://nwkite.com/forums/post-241557.html&highlight=#241557

Here is a sarcastic comment for MattV who lives on the Oregon coast in the summer - Good luck with your non-tourism economy! I'm sure the Oregon coast will rebound without tourists!

OK, no problem. No great loss there to the community. If I see you at the sandbar though or the hatchery... Do you see where you're headed here?
Rock Creek on a scale of 1-10.

Ease of access, launch safety - 2

Water conditions - 3

Admittedly the wind quality is generally pretty good but there are so many better spots.

The Diarrhea Guy has been compared to Bulae99 on here in the past. Just sayin'.

On another note, this thread sorta cracks me up. It reminds me of one of the more memorable surf sessions I've had at a highly-contested surf break along Pt. Loma, during which I ended up sitting between two Sunset Cliffs residents, one an old Rick-Flair-lookin' donkey on a longboard and the other some young chippy shredder wannabe, arguing loudly about which one was "more local". Meanwhile, some kook from OR caught all the waves...

Are we having fun yet? Laughing

Mosier has now painted a stigma of "locals only" upon their town. This is not a water spicket you can simply turn on/off. People will remember.

The "few" local businesses in Mosier will suffer years from now for this little splurge of recreational enjoyment defined for "locals only".

Whether Matt V was being sarcastic or not is irrelevant. He definitely expressed his opinions as a "non-local". This will likely influence his decision down the road whether to spend his hard earned cash at places like MOCO.

I think this decision is short sighted and extremely detrimental to the long term sustainability of Mosier's local business community.

It is one thing when the beach locals act "local". But when an authoritative governmental entity does so the impact is far more reaching.

There's another fun little wrinkle to this story - land ownership. The City of Mosier does indeed own the land where the parking lot is. Much of the actual beach is Koberg State Recreation Area, though. State parks/rec areas are closed. The city of Mosier is effectively allowing/perhaps encouraging it's citizens to violate a state land closure.

I doubt the state will enforce this but I'd bet they wouldn't be too stoked on what Mosier is doing out there right now.
