I'm heading to Maui in a couple weeks and flying alaska airlines. Wondering about how stringent bag policy enforcement is.

1) I was wondering what to be mindful when packing. How important is it to avoid being overweight?
2) Also, paid for the insurance ($44 which include bag protection)- > but I usually hate to pay for that- any recommendations on the insurance for future reference?

Jan 2018, On Alaska, Flew to cabo for La Ventana and had enormous, oversize/overweight bags- no additional bag fees

This year Feb 2019- Down to Cabo. No fees- WAY overweight and WAY oversize (3 surfboard dakine coffin bag, one 4'10 surfboard, 4 kites, 2 bars, harness, wetsuits)

Back up to PDX- $75 for overweight.

I really shouldnt complain, but I would like to be educated on other's experience.

Thanks
Ken

My wife and I flew PDX>Maui in November . Paid $25 each for oversized bags , 1 "golf" bag and 1 surfboard bag. We kept the weight right near or under 50lbs. Same experience with Alaska flying PDX>SJD in January.

Golf bag @ 48lbs PDX to SJD and back a few weeks ago and no charge either way. Tag it at the self serve kiosk, drop at baggage desk and go.

No bad experiences here. I just got back from La Ventana and had a golf back packed full of all my gear -- board, 3 kites, 2 wetsuits, harness, etc. and only paid $25 each way. I was sure that thing weighed over 50lbs but it came in at 46lbs. From what I understand Alaska used to charge $75 but they dropped it to $25 for sports equipment. If it weighs over 50lbs then they'll charge $75.
