See 5/7/18 updated report at bottom of this post!
Water quality is back to normal murky levels.

Warnings for The Dalles over to Rowena (maybe Mosier).
Also could have implications for Hood River, but do not know.

CITY OF THE DALLES
Department of Public Works

The Dalles, Oregon 97058

PRESS RELEASE

DATE: May 5, 2018

TOPIC: Wastewater Treatment Plant Discharge Exceeds E. coli Limit

CONTACT: Public Works Department (541) 296-5401

FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY

The City of The Dalles Wastewater Treatment Plant has discharged effluent that exceeds the plant’s limit for E. coli due to incomplete disinfection. Sample test results received May 5, 2018 have confirmed that the treatment process is not under control. The cause of the exceedance is unknown at this time. Wastewater treatment staff is working hard to quickly return to normal operations.

Staff has increased frequency of sampling until E. coli counts are back within permit limits. Samples will also be taken at pre-arranged locations in the river to provide data on the effect of the discharge on water quality in the river.

Signs have been placed at locations of public river access on the Oregon shore of the Columbia River, from The Dalles Riverfront Park to West Mayer Park boat launch. The signs say: “Warning - Contaminated Water - No water contact” and give phone numbers to call for information.

For information about Washington shore public river access, contact Klickitat County Emergency Management at (509) 773-4545.

The Department is in communication with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and local health department officials to coordinate response. Questions can be directed to the Public Works Department office at (541) 296-5401.[b]

They should also test the E. coli levels on the grass at the Event Site from the goose poop.

PRESS RELEASE

DATE: May 7, 2018

TOPIC: Wastewater Treatment Plant Discharge Returned to Compliance

CONTACT: Public Works Department (541) 296-5401

FOR RELEASE: IMMEDIATELY

The discharge from the City of The Dalles Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Columbia River has returned to compliance with permit limits for E. coli as of May 6, 2018 at 4:15 p.m. The samples taken on May 5, 2018 throughout the day at the City discharge point to the river were within limits for each individual sample and for an average of five samples. The delay in reading out the test results is due to the 24-hour incubation time that the test requires.

Samples taken at pre-arranged locations in the river late in the day on May 5, 2018 were within limits for each sample.

Signs which were placed at locations of public river access on the Oregon shore of the Columbia River, to warn of contaminated water, will be taken down today.

For information about Washington shore public river access, contact Klickitat County Emergency Management at (509) 773-4545.

The Department is in communication with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and local health department officials to coordinate demobilization. Questions can be directed to the Public Works Department office at (541) 296-5401.
