Air temps in mid sixties this week with sun and wind but water temp at Bonneville is 42 degrees

So dress for the swim!

4/3 might not cut it if you are In the drink for a while...

was a bit hypothermic two weeks ago in my 7mil open cell dive suit (usually super toasty)

not too bad 47 degrees at Hood Canal for my freedive training with Oregon Freediving but there is some hanging around waiting - was actually warmer (50 degrees) down 66 feet

the guys in Bend are pretty badass - I thought it was bit nuts in 40 degree deschutes and 40 degree airtemp over thanksgiving - but you can check the cam and the crew is surfing the bend whitewater park in their 5/4 surf suits everyday all winter Shocked

I kited with someone who wore a 4/3 yesterday. he wore a wetsuit top under his suit to help with layering. so it's possible.
I think the more important issue is dressing for the swim. I could wear my 4/3 while on the water and minimize my exposure by staying up on a plane, however once you're in the drink and floating down the river, that's where you want the protection from the elements.

People underestimate how quickly hypothermia can kick in during a self-rescue if not dressed properly... dress for the swim not the ride!

Murphy's Law when you go out for just a "quick" session because you don't want to deal with your drysuit parking lot wrestling match something will break on the water. +1, always dress for the swim.

Here's the Coast guard chart for hypothermia. Seems like you're good for 1 -3 hours this time of year.

Try about 30 minutes, an hour if you're lucky. And that's only because we're having an abnormally warm winter. Normally this time of year the river sits at about 38-39. So then you'd have as little as 15 minutes. Look at the chart again. Expected time of survival assumes you are wearing a PFD that will keep your head above water. Time to "Exhaustion or Unconsciousness" is what you want to look at. If you're already cold or tired, those numbers go down even further. Once you inhale water, which you'll do quickly if you become exhausted or unconscious, you'll sink like a rock.

I swam from the midpoint of the river to wa side of the river once in February at viento and I was pretty cold but not too bad. The river was below 40 and I was a bit panicked at first but after 10 minutes swimming I realized I was fine. Mark Ribcoff drove all the way over to give me a ride, thanks mark!!!

Sounds about right... If you're dressed well the time guidelines don't apply.

Thats why you always kite with a buddy.

They have somewhere between a .5 and 2.5 hours to drag your unconscious body to shore...

What could possibly go wrong? Question Question Question
