I heard Meadows hopes to open this weekend if the weather cooperates and they can get everything ready on time. It's easier to get people to come to their pray for snow party on Saturday if they have lifts running.

The snow report is hinting at an early opening, and they have closed the in-bounds terrain to hiking as they begin their set up.

They are reporting a 30" base at mid mountain and have certainly opened with less snow in some of the lean years.

Anyone have info or links to rules on snowshoeing up and boarding down Meadows when it is not open? I am thinking of doing this Thanksgiving morning when they are not open but, want to make sure I don't run afoul of any rules.

I had read somewhere that you could do this before they opened for the season but, if they run this weekend, is that off the table now?

Thanks for any info.

When Meadows is open they allow uphill traffic adjacent to the resort.
These routes are difficult on an early season snow pack.
You can go hike uphill on the North side via Heather canyon - but the creek crossings are not in so it can be difficult. You have to bush wack around the streams.
The other route is up the far South side but the downhill terrain is not that great.

You might consider hiking up at Timberline. You can hike up the far right-hand side of Magic Mile and then up the Palmer. Palmer lift is closed in winter but you can hike up there.
From the Meadows website -
Designated hiking routes are:
Heather Canyon Runout - Proceed uphill from the Hood River Meadows Parking Lot to the first sign just below Gods Wall. If the sign is CLOSED exit the Mt. Hood Meadows Permit Area towards the Newton Drainage. Please do not travel farther uphill on the Heather Canyon Runout.

If the sign is OPEN continue traveling uphill on the Heather Canyon Runout to the CLOSED sign directly adjacent to the bottom of the Heather Canyon Chairlift. Turn right exiting the Mt. Hood Meadows Permit Area towards the Newton drainage.

South Boundary - From the main parking lot proceed uphill toward the bottom of the Vista Chairlift. Turn left at the bottom of Vista exiting the Mt. Hood Meadows Permit Area.

Hi ldhr,

Thanks very much for the info. I have done the hike up Timberline a few times, just thought I would try something different with Meadows.

Anyone done White River Canyon for a shoe up/board down?

The easiest way to do this is to park at Timberline & ride down the canyon, then hitch-hike back up to Timberline. I’ve usually barely had time to release my bindings before somebody’s already pulled over on 35 wating to give me a ride...

FWIW, like most of the glacial valleys in that area, you get a short, fun, steep shot, followed by lots of long, boring traversing in the runout. Your mileage may vary. Since you’re a knuckle-dragger (me too), take collapsible poles. A split board is a nice tool for this jaunt.

Not to sound like your mom (I know, I sound like mom a lot... Laughing), but please pay attention to the avalanche report! This is real backcountry terrain, even though it’s accessible from the edge of a ski area parking lot, and early season conditions are notoriously fickle.

Shred it up!

Hi HT,

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, checking avalanche forecast is on my list but do appreciate the worry. Just like mom.

I have collapsable poles and used a splitboard when I did St. Helens but, prefer my shoes/board combo.

The entire climber’s left slope of white river canyon is gonna be a wind-loaded slabby beeotch this weekend.

I’d give it a pass, personally.

But then, I have no pride whatsoever in matters such as these, and I’m usually the first to bail if my spidey senses are tingling...

(Storytime: I bailed on that beautiful spring day in May several years ago [yeah, I’m old] when those Mazama folks died below the west crater rim. My GF and I watched the body recovery operation afterwards from a safe spot below. It was not a good scene. And it was *entirely* predictable and avoidable. Glenn K had posted a xeroxed warning in the climber’s shack that noted the avalanche danger, but that didn’t stop 100 or more other folks from making the wrong decision. That experience, among others, is why I get passionate about this sorta stuff...)
