Okay, so I have been working hard on switching feet by coming off foil, and am at about 90% success. I'd like to start some foot switches on foil, but want to avoid the rotating scimitar of carbon death as much as possible.

Anyone have a money tip or two for me, other than do 40,000 of them, which I am absolutely planning on doing?

Thanks,
Eric

Working on same thing.
Don't be shy to move your front foot up as you raise the kite and carve around. I found having gotten used to moving my feet an inch at a time, it feels different to go back to sliding a foot a foot or so up the deck!
Stay centered, keep your center of gravity behind your feet and in front of the mast.
Keep some speed and don't anticipate the turn and fall forward (my first attempts tended to be too slow and falling forward).

Okay. Maybe it makes sense to practice on reaches--heel to toe, back to heel--and not worry about the transition--turning around--at all, as I can transition on foil no problem regardless of being heel or toe side a this point.

As a beginner I learned to fear moving my feet more than a little at a time. Once you get the balamce down, it is surprising how you can be up on the front of the board (but light on your feet) for a second or two without instant crashing. So far my best in control jibes have the board barely touching down at the tail for a second and popping back up as I move my new back foot back over the mast. Fun!
The other 80 or 90% though....

definitely switch the feet while riding straight, not while turning.

have the foil rising up a bit before you switch, then...

emphasize weight on the front of the board as you swap feet
(since the foil is rising, it can handle some extra front foot pressure after you switch)

have decent speed for consistent lift and stability from the foil

Will a small pumping motion help, and switch on rise?

I am fairly convinced that in order to obtain the powers to switch your feet while flying on the foil, it can only be done once you have hunted, captured and obtained the magical dust found only within a unicorns horn.
I'm sure it also involves a full moon and some magical incantations, but I am still working on finding those answers.

Or, you are a tall teenager named Frederick.

Pretty sure Fred's a hologram, of no mass, dimension, or Earth-bound limitation. In fact, pretty sure his image comes to us via a wormhole from an nth-dimension.

i think of it as getting light on the front foot, so the foil tips up a bit.

also, the kite is nice and high, but still in front

I'm starting to try to switch my feet while foiling. Have had some scary falls, but no injuries (yet). Some folks make it look effortless - it's not! Especially the guys doing tacks and 360s - I hope to get there someday. The whole jibing on foil thing has taken me just as long to learn as getting up on foil in the first place.

I'm in this same boat. %90 success with quick splash & switch.... less than %5 with foil-switch. Always switching in a straight ride, not in the carve. Weird how some days I'll get like 12 in a row, then go hours with nothing.
Thank You for all the help here. Up here in Tacoma there's so much toxic waste that all the unicorns died off in the 50's.

Eric, if anyone can do this, you can. You may not remember that several springs ago you somehow managed to tack back upwind on an underpowered 9m to rescue me while I was swimming in the middle of the river with no kite or board in between Wells and Hatch. You towed me to Wells and by the time I hitched back you were swimming to the spit with no wind in your sails after saving me. I'll never forget your selfless heroics. You're the man.
