Great video ! About teaching kids to kite, at what age do you think it's reasonable to give it a go ? My son is now 8 and may get interested in being awesome like his dad

Thanks guys! It was definitely very rewarding to see my kids pick up the bug this summer.
mcfly777, my younger son is 9 years old and I would say it's borderline too young for him to kite but I think it has more to do with size and confidence the water. Size matters for being able to properly reach the bar and extend arms to depower (even though it's always possible to trim) and for body dragging. With the lifejacket and smaller kite, a shorter body will make it difficult to body drag upwind and recover a board. Confidence in the water and strong swimming ability is a total must. In addition, I would also say that snowboarding comes as a huge advantage and translate very well into kiteboarding. My sons have no hesitation transitioning from heelside to toeside even though they barely started kiting but I think it all comes from linking turns on the mountains.
Finally, the saying: "you can take a horse to the water but you can't force it to drink" applies very much to anything kids related. Because you love kiting doesn't mean that your kids will want to do it. It usually takes a third party to inspire them to want to try. And it's definitely one of these sports where you don't want to push them into, you want them to want to do it on their own and be self-motivated. |
