Hello,
My wife and I are at board starts. Looking for a destination where the conditions are good to learn. Flat water, 12 to 20 knots and affordable accomodations for the month of either July or August. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

The Gorge would be my suggestion. Some days the wind is crazy, but most days are great.

Come on out and support the local/US economy! However, isn't there some lake up in BC that has steady winds almost every day in the summertime? Seen pics and read posts about it here on this site. Comps happen up there some time every summer. . . Can anyone chime in with the 411?

it,s something like nikata check on the ocean rodeo site they hold events their. I would also say floras lake may be better for beginers than the gorge. But by the end of the summer you should be ready for the gorge.

Hi & welcome to the board!

Flat water:

Oregon- Floras Lake http://www.floraslake.com/ Can be a little crowded for beginners on the weekends.

North Carolina- Cape Hatteras

Texas- South Padre Island. (I'm not sure what the wind is like here in the Summer.)

This is certainly not an all inclusive list. Just some of the destinations that come to mind.

If you can break away for a winter trip then add Isla Blanca just North of Cancun. Cheap accommodations at Hacienda Punta Sam. Here's the thread on my trip there last year.

I can't imagine a better place to learn than Isla Blanca!

You can go to Nitinaht Lake on Vacouver Island in British Columbia but you have to camp out. Water is a little chilly but fairly flat to mild chop. Very nice place and lots of fun.

SPI is great from now until mid May then it gets a little light and very hot and humid for the summer.

La Ventana in Baja is good from now until early to mid April. Gets a little choppy but overall is pretty beginner friendly.

I'm still not sold on Cancun having consistent enough wind to make the trip.

Overall I like the Gorge, the coast and Nitinaht in the summer and SPI in the winter.

Tony

I think they mean averaging 12 to 20 knots, not 12 gusting 20... Wink

Nah, the Gorge is fine! Rentals should be more plentiful this summer, and if you need equipment (and the best advice) this is the place to be. The sun even came out this month! (Sorry, been housebound a little too long).

I go to South Padre in the fall and spring. Cheap, steady, and reliable. I'll travel a little more internationally when time and budget allow... Argentina looks pretty enticing from the other thread!

When you come to the Gorge bring your saline solution.
